The Saints Go Marching In…New Orleans Wins Super Bowl XLIV
On Sunday, February 7th, 2010 The New Orleans Saints made NFL history with their first ever franchise Super Bowl Championship, in a 31-17 win over The Indianapolis Colts.
Saints QB Drew Brees was Super Bowl MVP in his first Super Bowl appearance, completing 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. But it was Saints CB Tracy Porter who stepped in front of Reggie Wayne, to intercept Peyton Manning‘s pass and return it 74 yards for a touchdown to give New Orleans a 31-17 lead with 3:12 remaining in the game who clenched the victory.
This was more than just a win for a football team though, this was a huge victory for the people of New Orleans and the entire state of Louisiana. New Orleans knows how to celebrate, but for the beleaguered city and its long-bedraggled NFL franchise, the championship touched off a new kind of joy.
“Four years ago, who ever thought this would be happening when 85 percent of the city was under water?” Brees said. “Most people left not knowing if New Orleans would ever come back, or if the organization would ever come back. We just all looked at one another and said, `We are going to rebuild together. We are going to lean on each other.’ This is the culmination in all that belief.”
